HamsterOS Beta 3 is ready

HamsterOS Beta 3 is build .77.12. HamsterOS is still a free 1.44 MB floppy image. Hamster Extras has been rebuilt to match it and remains the optional paid disk.

Applications and multitasking

• External applications now load into protected memory and unload when they are closed.
• With 8 MB or more, HamsterOS can keep several applications open and switch between them. A 2 MB system runs one application at a time.
• HamWrite and HamSheets now have undo and more complete editing, formatting, and deletion commands.

Video and hardware support

• Cirrus Logic 800x600x16 has been tested on real hardware.
• Supported VBE cards can use 640x480x256 or 800x600x256 with at least 3 MB of RAM.
• IBM XGA-2 systems can use the standard 640x480 VGA mode.
• Support has been improved for the IBM PS/2 Model 77 and P75, PicoMEM, ATA and SCSI drives, and copying long filenames from CD.

HamChat 0.6.3

HamChat now includes 30 emoji, 12 audibles, rich messages, Burrows, friend activity, and delivery and read receipts. It uses the same free Mean Hamster account on every version. HamNet+ is not required.

Printing, sound, and HCommand

• Notepad and HamWrite can print text through LPT1. HamsterPaint and Image Viewer can print graphics. The Control Panel can print a test page.
• The Audio Player supports MP3, WAV, VOC, PCM, MOD, and MIDI. MP3 playback uses adaptive buffering to help it keep up on older machines.
• HCommand now supports one to four commanders, including computer-controlled sides, local-network games, and HamNet friend or random matchmaking. It also has larger maps, fog, resources, base building, new sounds and artwork, and faster drawing.

Hamster Extras Beta 3

The Hamster Extras installer works from either A: or B: and has been tested on a 2 MB system. It installs and checks 69 files from one 1.44 MB disk.
