A new engine for the C64

We are excited to announce the MHS Power Engine (MPE) and DoomVM for the TeensyROM+ cartridge. MPE is the virtual-machine platform we created to run downloadable engines directly on the Teensy processor while the C64 handles its display, SID sound, keyboard, and joystick.

DoomVM is the first public MPE engine. It is fast and smooth, runs in the Teensy 4.1's 1 MB of memory, and needs no 16 MB REU, PSRAM, or other add-on configuration.

Ready to install

Use a TeensyROM+ v0.4 with a Teensy 4.1, install the latest MPE-enabled firmware or our custom GUI firmware edition, HamsterOS_64, and copy the DoomVM package to the SD card. Travis Smith of Sensorium Embedded created the TeensyROM hardware and original firmware; our project builds on his work.

More VM engines ahead

We are developing more MPE engines, including NES and Game Boy emulators. DoomVM is just the first look at what this new C64 cartridge platform can do.

Go to the MPE project Downloads section for the firmware, DoomVM package, setup instructions, and controls, or visit the DoomVM game page for both display modes and requirements.
