Sierra Game Compiler release notes
Changes by version. For today’s games, platforms and requirements, visit the product page. Older entries describe their release at the time.
Download current Windows compiler · v2.3.8 →Version 2.3.8
- TI-99/4A: The Black Cauldron joins the native library. Requires a supported original DOS edition and 32 KiB memory expansion.
- MSX2: King’s Quest II and King’s Quest III join the native library, with corrected picture loading and overlays.
The new ports are Highly Experimental and require supported original game files. TI-99/4A exports on Apple Silicon require Rosetta 2.
Version 2.3.7
- King’s Quest I — ADAM F18A Enhanced 128K: a dedicated edition with improved graphics, wider title, faster walking and repaired menus, including compatible Pico9918 systems. ADAM Standard stays available separately.
- Windows network folders: repaired compiler startup and clearer messages when a compiler response fails.
- Another World: clearer original-file instructions and support for another qualified two-disk Amiga edition.
The enhanced ADAM edition needs supported original KQ1 files, 128 KiB total RAM, 2 MiB disk support, and F18A v1.9 or Pico9918 F18A firmware 1.0.1+. Windows, Apple Silicon and Intel Mac packages are available; Mac builds are signed and notarized.
Version 2.3.6
- King’s Quest I C64: repaired beanstalk transitions and picture overlays. Recompile the standard native C64 cartridge to receive these changes.
- Six Atari save slots: room and score details, overwrite confirmation and recovery from a damaged newest save.
- Windows save-disk backup and restore utility.
- Room-performance management and reports, preserving gameplay behaviour.
- Native C128 King’s Quest I and Space Quest I.
Windows, Apple Silicon and Intel Mac packages are available. Mac packages are signed and notarized. Software checks do not establish physical hardware or complete-game acceptance.
Version 2.3.3
Experimental ADAM F18A Enhanced editions of King’s Quest I and Space Quest I join the standard editions. They add GPU masking, additional colours and EGA-style artwork. They require F18A firmware 1.9, 128 KiB total RAM and 2 MiB media, plus a supported original DOS edition. Native Mac ADAM preparation is repaired on Apple Silicon and Intel. Performance varies by scene; physical ADAM and full-game testing remain open.
Version 2.3.2
File and folder selection is more reliable, especially on Mac. Pickers stay with the correct app window and pass your selection back after closing. Cancel and retry work cleanly, and selection problems show a clear message. Qualified games, editions and converter sources are unchanged from 2.3.1.
Version 2.3.1
A maintenance update kept Sierra Game Compiler and Power Engine on the same version. Qualified games, editions and converter sources remained unchanged from 2.3.0.
Version 2.3.0
- The same simple library as Power Engine: platform tabs, screenshot cards and a white appearance on Windows, Apple Silicon Mac and Intel Mac. Both products adopted this interface in version 2.3.0.
- Check files, then Include: validate originals when you choose. The card menu lets you change file locations, and selections save immediately for each platform.
- Review & Prepare: see your selections, estimated game sizes and before/after storage before starting preparation.
- Cancel and completed reports: stop preparation, keep completed outputs and see what finished. Failed conversions offer View log.
- Find your favourites: Featured leads with Another World and M.U.L.E.+. Included sorts selected games first, and Buy Me a Coffee is visible in the shared toolbar.
Version 1.1.19
King’s Quest III’s starting objects, colours and opening speed, Mixed-Up Mother Goose’s text and walking, the updated native Another World runtime and the existing Mac repairs remain included.
Version 1.1.17
- King’s Quest I well repair: bucket, rope and diving routes work correctly on C64, Atari XL/XE, MSX2/MSX-DOS2, Coleco ADAM and TI-99/4A.
- C64 mouse walking: fixes characters sliding without advancing their walking animation, especially on diagonals.
- Faster game-script checks: faster C64 script reading and condition processing across all seventeen games, with measured automatic optimizations for qualified editions and settings.
- Coleco ADAM: King’s Quest I and Space Quest I receive faster game-script checks, alongside the King’s Quest I well repair. Qualified Atari, MSX2 and TI-99/4A builds also receive measured native checks.
- Compiler repairs: King’s Quest II builds with optimizations disabled, required Atari character rendering is retained, and Atari cartridge capacity selection is improved.
- Rebuild your game images: existing saved-game formats remain compatible. Use your own original game files to receive these updates.
Atari arrow keys work without Control for walking, menus and inventory. Control+arrows continue to work. The first-use guide is retained; follow the native game tutorial for setup, expected editions and cartridge requirements. Matching Apple Silicon and Intel Mac downloads are available.
The Atari controls from 1.1.14 are retained: Control+1 through Control+9/0 handle the original function-key actions, HELP handles F1 and TAB opens inventory/status where supported. Menus and game messages show the correct Atari controls, and longer help labels fit their authored rows without clipping or wrapping, including King's Quest I's help screen. Source-layout compatibility and the Space Quest I C64 cartridge display name repair are retained.
King's Quest I and Space Quest I also support MSX2, Coleco ADAM and TI-99/4A. These three systems remain Highly Experimental: packaged builds have been checked, while full-game and real-hardware testing remain open. All five systems build directly on Windows or Mac.
The compiler retains the walking and drawing optimizations, Normal C64 timing improvements, unused-code trimming, PAL C64 keyboard repair and Space Quest I title-animation repair from 1.1.13. Existing saves remain compatible.
